Roman Anthony and Jarren Duran combine for three home runs in United States win over Mexico
Two members of the Boston Red Sox outfield spent Monday night showing exactly why the team is excited about its offensive potential this season, even if they had to do it on opposite sides.
Roman Anthony and Jarren Duran delivered one of the most entertaining individual matchups of the early World Baseball Classic tournament during Team USA’s 5-3 victory over Mexico at Daikin Park in Houston.
The two Red Sox teammates traded highlight moments throughout the game, creating a back-and-forth showcase that could offer a preview of Boston’s outfield production later this season.
The first key moment came in the second inning, and it initially belonged to Duran.
After Anthony reached base with a walk for Team USA, Brice Turang ripped a double into the right-field corner that appeared likely to score the game’s first run. Duran, playing right field for Mexico, quickly tracked down the ball and fired a strike toward the infield. The relay from Nick Gonzales reached home plate just in time to nail Anthony attempting to score, completing a 9-4-2 putout that kept the Americans off the board.
The bragging rights didn’t last long.
An inning later, Anthony flipped the script in emphatic fashion.
After Aaron Judge opened the scoring with a home run, the Red Sox prospect followed with a towering three-run blast off Jesus Cruz. The 417-foot drive left Anthony’s bat at 105.5 mph and helped push the United States to a commanding early lead.

Duran answered later in the game with an impressive power display of his own.
Facing left-hander Matthew Boyd in the sixth inning, Duran launched a 364-foot opposite-field homer into the outfield boxes to get Mexico on the board.
Two innings later, he struck again against Boyd, pulling another solo shot to right field for his second homer of the night.
The pair of long balls continued a strong run for Duran in the tournament, as the Red Sox outfielder has now homered three times in two games after going deep in Mexico’s previous matchup as well.
For Boston, the performances from both players were particularly encouraging.
Throughout spring training, questions have lingered about where Boston’s power production will come from this season. Anthony and Duran are two players the organization hopes will help answer that question, and Monday’s showdown provided a glimpse of that potential.
Anthony, widely regarded as one of baseball’s top prospects, has impressed with his blend of plate discipline and raw power. Duran, meanwhile, appears to be tapping back into his 2024 form while also flashing improved success against left-handed pitching.
By the end of the night, Anthony’s Team USA squad walked away with the victory and improved to 3-0 in pool play.
But the biggest takeaway for the Red Sox might have been seeing two key outfielders thrive on the international stage, even if it meant going head-to-head in the process.
