No matter how this season finishes, it’s clear Celtic face a huge summer rebuild.
Recruitment issues already cost the Hoops a place in the Champions League qualifiers last August, and they now risk losing the Premiership title, sitting two points behind Hearts ahead of a crucial clash at Tannadice Park.
While fans will be calling for reinforcements across defence, midfield, and attack, the most urgent problem may lie between the posts.
Schmeichel’s Situation Raises Alarm
Until recently, Kasper Schmeichel had been Celtic’s first-choice goalkeeper. However, a run of costly mistakes saw Viljami Sinisalo step in, starting the last five matches after coming into the side in Stuttgart.
Now, it appears Schmeichel may have already played his final game for the club.
After disappearing from the squad—having last been seen on the bench at the Neckarstadion—his absence raised serious questions. Those were answered when he appeared on CBS’ Champions League coverage alongside his father, Peter Schmeichel, revealing the full extent of his injury.
“I’m going to need two surgeries to fix my shoulder… I’ve torn the biceps, torn the rotator cuff, dislocated the shoulder, torn the labrum… it’s looking like 10-12 months of rehab… I could have played my last-ever football game.”
The veteran goalkeeper confirmed he requires multiple surgeries on a severely damaged shoulder. With a recovery timeline of up to a year, he admitted he may have already played the final match of his career.
It’s a devastating situation, especially with Schmeichel turning 40 later this year. Even more concerning is the revelation that the injury dates back to March 2025 while on international duty with Denmark, yet he continued playing for months—reportedly relying on pain-killing injections.
Has He Played His Last Game for Celtic?
From Celtic’s perspective, the situation looks final. With his contract expiring this summer and such a lengthy recovery ahead, it’s highly unlikely he will feature for the club again.
For now, Sinisalo will continue as the team’s number one as Celtic push for both league and Scottish Cup success, including a semi-final clash against St Mirren at Hampden.
While the Finnish goalkeeper has delivered steady performances, there are doubts about whether he is the long-term solution for a club with Celtic’s ambitions.
Goalkeeper Now Top Transfer Priority
That leaves Celtic with a clear objective heading into the transfer window: sign a new first-choice goalkeeper.
The club has a recent history of targeting experienced names in their mid-to-late 30s, including Craig Gordon, Fraser Forster, Joe Hart and Schmeichel himself.
If that trend continues, options such as Angus Gunn could emerge, while the possibility of a high-profile free agent like Manuel Neuer would certainly turn heads.
Whoever they turn to, one thing is certain: Celtic must act decisively to secure a reliable number one.
Support for Schmeichel
As for Schmeichel, supporters will undoubtedly hope he can recover from this devastating setback. His recent struggles now make far more sense, and regardless of how his Celtic spell ends, he deserves respect and well wishes for what lies ahead.
